For young learners, early literacy skills are essential building blocks. Educational institutions are responsible for implementing research-backed teaching methods that enable all students to excel academically and beyond. Early literacy development involves comprehending spoken language, expressing oneself verbally, decoding written text, and communicating in writing. Strong literacy skills are essential for continuous learning, civic engagement, and equal opportunity.

Educators, policy makers, and governments have been paying more attention to literacy instruction in the past few years, but it has always been a critical part of elementary education. Much of this attention comes from the post-pandemic effects; students not performing at grade level. Moreover, recent movements have highlighted the lack of evidence backing popular reading programs. Schools and districts are currently reviewing their literacy programs and searching for research-backed, evidence-based solutions for early literacy.

Because early literacy skills require ample, differentiated practice; schools are constantly looking for additional programs and will often adopt multiple solutions. Going beyond what the core curriculum has to offer enables students to stay more engaged and learning to be differentiated easier.

Seesaw’s early literacy content and instructional tools support schools’ needs for high quality supplemental curriculum. But don’t take our word for it. Hear from our community of educators the secrets that make Seesaw the perfect tool to unlock powerful early literacy growth.

How has Seesaw revolutionized word recognition activities and early literacy development in your classroom?

  • “I love to see growth in students’ reading and spelling. A few years ago I looped with my class which included a few students who were well behind reading level. After two years of doing a reading intervention with them, getting them more interested in reading, and using Seesaw for spelling and phonics pattern sorts and work, I saw so much growth in these students by the end of the second year.” – Amara B., 5th Grade Teacher
  • “Seesaw allows all my students to record themselves. This allows all students to engage throughout the lessons versus just listening to the teacher speak.” – Margaret O., 2nd Grade Teacher
  • “Seesaw made small group instruction a breeze as each person had what they needed.” – Gwendolen G., Dyslexia Interventionist
  • “I am able to differentiate my students’ learning with Seesaw. Seesaw allows me to provide the perfect amount of support.” – Diane D., 4th Grade Teacher

These teachers have found that using Seesaw has been a crucial tool in dramatically improving their early literacy instruction. By adopting Seesaw’s easy to use platform and accessible tools, they were able to help their students get back on track quickly and easily.

How is language development practice made better when done with Seesaw?

  • “Our reading program has a really boring phonics piece that is all just pencil and paper. I created assignments to go with the program and the students are so much more engaged and invested in their learning!” – Julie B., 2nd Grade Teacher
  • “Students can be assigned different activities based on their own learning pathways. Then use Seesaw tools to reflect and share. This allows students to progress at their own rate and use Seesaw to share their growth!” – Mckinzie K., 2nd Grade Teacher
  • “During reading groups, I can work with students at different phonics levels, while others can be doing high quality Seesaw activities. For students that are new to English, Seesaw is a life-saver.” – Carly A., Year 2 Teacher

Early literacy programs emphasize practice and repetition. However, this may be at the cost of losing student engagement and interest. Seesaw enabled these teachers to reengage learners and provide them with specific learning opportunities tailored to their needs by providing them with the tools they needed.

How does Seesaw enable early intervention for all learners?

  • “With Seesaw, I was able to pinpoint specific at risk students, thus allowing early intervention and an opportunity to close the gaps much earlier in the year.” Crissy C., PreK Teacher
  • “The best thing about Seesaw is the ability to respond to and receive feedback orally. It opens doors for success along the way.” – Christy D., 2nd Grade Teacher
  • “When seeking progress monitoring documentation in an early childhood setting, performance based tasks are where the action is at. Seesaw as digital portfolio is perfect for tracking their progress.” – Debra M., Instructional Coach

The ability to make faster, better decisions that support concrete evidence and learning artifacts is one of the key characteristics of effective teaching. Through Seesaw’s digital portfolio, teachers gain the ability to do just that making it the perfect teaching partner.

How does Seesaw foster a safe and supportive learning environment, particularly for students with diverse learning needs?

Seesaw administrator assisting a student on iPad

  • “Seesaw enables me to record video scaffolds and prompts so that children who are working at a level significantly below their peers have the support they need, this has an enormous positive impact on pupils’ confidence and self-esteem.” – Joanna C., Year 6 Teacher
  • “Loading daily Phonics activities in Seesaw for students enabled them to work independently using the various tools to show what they know, so I was able to further differentiate their instruction during small group time to meet their needs.” – Lisa W., 3rd Grade Teacher
  • “I use Seesaw for its accessibility features to help meet the needs of all of my different types of learning. Some prefer to speak than write. Some need visuals and the ability to actually move items around. My students really love doing phonics lessons in the Seesaw program.” – Katherine G., Reading Specialist

Providing equal access to content means removing learning barriers, especially for diverse learners. By providing students with a safe and supportive learning environment through Seesaw, they were able to see themselves in the content and access it at a level they were comfortable with.

How has Seesaw involved families in early literacy instruction and supported students’ reading development outside the classroom?

  • “We use Seesaw to post a video of reading a just right book and send it to their parents. Parents can see the text the child is reading as well as see their child in the video. They love listening to their child read on a daily basis and can see the reading growth.” – Carol J., Inclusion Teacher
  • “Seesaw has allowed me to make lessons based on our home readers that students can access at home. I engage with parents about how they are supporting their child with their reading. I hear students read, give feedback and engage with the learning even while at home.” – Maria-Anna M., K-6 Coach

Involving families in learning not only keeps them informed about growth on a regular basis, but also establishes a strong partner for at home support. Through Seesaw, these teachers strengthened their relationship with their families and fostered support for home learning.

Literacy is one of the most critical foundational subjects for elementary students. Our youngest learners must get high-quality, evidence-based, equitable instruction that allows them to succeed in school and life. Early literacy is the foundation of acquiring language through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Literacy knowledge encourages academic achievement, lifelong learning, active citizenship, and equitable participation in our 21st-century society.

In recent years literacy has received even more attention from educators, public policy, and government – putting it in the spotlight for many districts.  A lot of this new attention comes from the post-pandemic effects we have seen in reading & literacy data; students are behind grade-level in this critical, foundational area. Moreover, there have been recent movements highlighting the lack of evidence backing popular reading programs. At this critical time, many schools and districts are looking into their literacy programs and looking for evidence-backed, research-based solutions for early literacy.

Word Recognition

Word recognition is invaluable in learning to read as it enables swift and accurate identification of words, fostering fluent reading and comprehension. Proficient word recognition leads to reading fluency, allowing readers to focus on understanding the text rather than slowing down to decode individual words. Additionally, it contributes to vocabulary development by exposing readers to a diverse range of words encountered in text, promoting language enrichment. Purposeful practice of word recognition skills is more important than ever. With proficient word recognition, readers gain independence and confidence in reading, leading to increased engagement and enjoyment of reading. Overall, word recognition serves as a foundational skill that empowers readers to navigate texts with ease, unlocking the doors to enjoyment and lifelong learning. Given evidence-back strategies, educators can effectively support children’s development of phonological awareness, decoding skills, and sight word recognition–all components of word recognition–laying a strong foundation for reading success.

Strategies to Improve Students Word Recognition

Phonological Awareness:

  • Rhyming: Engage children in rhyming and rhyming games where they identify words that rhyme. This helps develop their awareness of phonemes and sound patterns.
  • Segmenting and Blending Sounds: Have students practice segmenting words into individual sounds and blending sounds together to form words.
  • Syllable Segmentation: Encourage children to clap or tap out the syllables in words. Start with simpler words and progress to more complex words as children develop proficiency.
  • Phoneme Manipulation: Have children manipulate phonemes within words by substituting, adding, or deleting sounds.

 Decoding:

  • Phonics Instruction: Provide systematic and explicit phonics instruction, teaching children the relationship between letters and sounds.
  • Word Families: Teach children to recognize common word patterns or word families Have them practice decoding words within the same word family to reinforce phonics skills.
  • Decodable Texts: Use decodable texts that contain phonetically regular words aligned with the phonics skills children are learning. Encourage children to apply their decoding skills while reading these texts.
  • Word Building Activities: Engage children in word building activities where they manipulate letter tiles or magnetic letters to form words. Encourage them to blend the sounds together to read the words they create.

Sight Word Recognition:

  • Word Walls: Create word walls with high-frequency sight words that children encounter frequently in text. Encourage children to practice reading and spelling these words regularly.
  • Flashcards: Use flashcards to practice sight word recognition. Review a set of sight words daily and have children read the words aloud or spell them.
  • Contextual Reading: Encourage children to identify sight words within the context of sentences or short passages. Provide opportunities for them to practice reading sight words in meaningful contexts.
  • Games and Activities: Incorporate games and activities that reinforce sight word recognition, such as sight word bingo, sight word memory match, or sight word scavenger hunts.

Language Comprehension and Development

Developing language skills early is critical for academic success and lifelong achievement, serving as the foundation for literacy growth. Oral language skills such as segmenting and blending sounds are strong predictors of word reading abilities. In addition, a robust vocabulary helps children to determine meaning from written text. Achieving optimal language development depends on access and opportunities to practice verbal interactions. From adult conversations and caregiver-child exchanges to content encountered on platforms like YouTube, children are exposed to various sources as models that develop their language skills. Early literacy is the foundation of acquiring language through listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Strategies for Language Comprehension and Development:

  1. Build Background Knowledge: Provide ways for students to build background knowledge through exposure to diverse texts, experiences, and discussions. Activate their prior knowledge before reading.
  2. Explicitly Teach Vocabulary Instruction: Teach vocabulary explicitly and systematically, focusing on tiered vocabulary words that are essential for comprehension. Use evidence-based strategies such as semantic mapping, word webs, and context clues to deepen understanding of vocabulary words.
  3. Demonstrate Language Structures: Implement structured literacy approaches that integrate phonology, syntax, and semantics, and more in a systematic and explicit manner.
  4. Expose Students to Verbal Reasoning: Engage children in text-based discussions to deepen comprehension and critical thinking skills. Encourage students to ask and answer questions about the text, make inferences, make connections to their own experiences, and support their ideas with evidence from the text.
  5. Broaden Students Literacy Experiences: Develop literacy knowledge by teaching concepts such as print concepts, genres, and text structures. Use scaffolded instruction to build upon children’s existing literacy knowledge and support their development as proficient readers and writers.

Early Intervention and Assessment

Early intervention and assessment ensure students growth is on track leading to long-term academic success and overall development. Identifying and addressing growth opportunities at an early age can lead to more effective outcomes and stronger interventions. Research shows that early intervention has long-term benefits for children’s academic achievement, social-emotional development, and overall well-being.

Strategies for Implementing Early Intervention and Assessment:

  1. Regularly Screen and Assess: Use evidence-based screening and assessment tools to identify ways to support students. Certain tools can assess various aspects of early literacy development, including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  2. Embed Observational Assessments: Conduct ongoing observations of student’s literacy behaviors and interactions with literacy materials in various contexts, such as during free play, small group activities, or reading time. Observational assessment provides valuable insights into children’s strengths, challenges, and progress in literacy development.
  3. Involve Parents or Caregivers: Engage parents and caregivers in the assessment process by providing information about early literacy milestones, offering opportunities for parent-teacher conferences, and encouraging home-based literacy activities. Collaborating with families ensures a holistic approach to supporting children’s literacy development.
  4. Progress Monitor: Implement ongoing progress monitoring to assess student growth and determine the effectiveness of interventions. Use formative assessments, such as curriculum-based measurements, to track students’ progress over time and make data-informed instructional decisions.

As educators prepare for yet another back-to-school season, the weight of responsibilities and expectations might overshadow the joy that once drew them to the profession. The demands of curriculum, assessment, and administrative tasks become overwhelming for all educators at one point or another. However, finding and nurturing the reason educators originally entered the profession is essential not only for the well-being of teachers but also for creating a positive and enriching learning environment for students. Looking to gain some inspiration around how to bring passion and enthusiasm back into the classroom? Read on.

Incorporate Creativity into the Classroom

Creativity can solve almost any problem—add it into lesson planning and let it work its magic. Seek inspiration from various sources, such as Seesaw’s educational blogs, workshops, conferences, and collaboration with colleagues. Explore innovative teaching methods, hands-on activities, and interactive technologies (like Seesaw’s!) that can make learning more enjoyable for both you and your students. When you see your students actively engaged and excited about learning, the joy of teaching grows and blooms.

Foster a Positive Classroom Culture

A positive and supportive classroom culture is the foundation for an enjoyable teaching experience. Create a safe and inclusive space where students feel valued and respected by encouraging open communication and active participation, and celebrating the diverse strengths and talents of each student. When an educator is able to create an atmosphere of celebration and acceptance, more than just learning occurs—students feel engaged and appreciated so they are more willing to try new things, think creatively, and participate actively leading to more advanced learning.

Seesaw classroom

Celebrate Successes

The seasons of the school year are busy. It’s as simple as that. This makes it crucial to take time to celebrate successes, both big and small. By acknowledging students’ achievements and progress (as well as your own!), educators are able to more clearly see how much of a difference they have made in the lives of others. Recognizing these moments of triumph will bring immense joy and satisfaction to the teaching journey.

Establish Meaningful Connections

Building meaningful relationships with students and colleagues can heavily impact the joy teachers find in teaching. Taking the time to get to know students individually and show genuine interest in their lives fosters trust and connection as well as a stronger teacher-student relationship.

The Real-World Relevance of Lessons

When students see the practical implications of their learning, their enthusiasm grows, leading to a sense of accomplishment for teachers, knowing they are making a meaningful impact. Do this by helping students understand the real-world relevance of the subjects taught by making connections between the curriculum and everyday life, illustrating how the knowledge and skills they acquire are applicable beyond the classroom.

Engage in Professional Development

Engaging in continuous professional development not only enhances your teaching skills but also infuses enthusiasm into your teaching practice. Attend workshops, conferences, and webinars that focus on areas of interest and relevance to your classroom. Seesaw is a great resource to help you jumpstart your professional development journey. Connect with other educators and share experiences and ideas. Being part of a supportive professional community can reignite your passion for teaching and remind you of the joy that comes from learning and growing.

Embrace a Growth Mindset

Adopting a growth mindset enables educators to bounce back from setbacks and failures more seamlessly. Instead of viewing challenges as obstacles, embrace them as opportunities for growth and improvement. By recognizing that mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, both teachers and students are able to approach each day with an open mind, ready to learn from experiences and adapt teaching strategies accordingly. This growth mindset will not only help teachers find joy in the journey but will also inspire students to do the same, creating an ideal learning environment for everyone.

A JOYFUL SCHOOL YEAR IS AHEAD

Teaching is no easy feat, but it is a profession that holds the potential to shape and change the lives of countless individuals. Teachers and educators know that there’s no such thing as enough time, resources, or energy. Seesaw is a great resource that helps reconcile some of these discrepancies as it saves teachers time, fosters creativity, and challenges students in an affordable and unique way.

With the help of Seesaw’s online learning platform, enter the new school year with renewed enthusiasm, passion, and a commitment to rediscover the joy in teaching as this joy is contagious and has the power to inspire students to become lifelong learners with a genuine love for education.

If you found these tips helpful, help students to also prioritize self care in your classroom.

Educators have always looked for ways to promote student agency and amplify student voice. Edtech tools that made this quick and simple became popular among teachers, with Seesaw and Flip (previously Flipgrid) gaining popularity by building high-quality products that met clear classroom needs – as well as cultivating strong and supportive teacher communities.

Recently, many in the teacher community were disappointed to see Flip discontinued as a standalone product, leaving educators who embedded the product in their teaching practices feeling unsettled.

We deeply understand the power of community. Educators have grown alongside one another by sharing ideas, creating together, taking risks, and building life-long connections. Their loss goes deeper than the tool itself. Many teachers who use Flip are in the Seesaw Community and reached out to ask for help. We’re here to help educators worldwide bridge this gap and continue to elevate student voice. For educators new to Seesaw or searching for Flip alternatives, sign up for a free account here.

Below, we’ve shared ways in which teachers use both Flip and Seesaw to promote student agency and elevate student voice with powerful video creation, sharing, and reflection capabilities.

Capture Engaging Student or Teacher Video Content

Seesaw makes it easy for students and teachers to capture video quickly. Simply click on the green add button, select the video, and you’re ready to go! In addition to making video capturing accessible to students of all ages, this simple workflow fosters a sense of ownership and voice throughout the classroom.

One of our newest tools is Seesaw Frames. These are “click-to-record” tools built right into student-facing Seesaw activities, making it even easier for students to get creative, document their learning, or share feedback. Teachers and students can also upload videos from external source videos, making them more engaging, and relevant to the subject matter.

“My students love to make videos in science class. For example when we were learning about volcanoes, they recorded themselves blowing bubbles into “lava.” They then explained their thinking on Seesaw. We use it like a digital science notebook.” – Tiffany H, Elementary teacher, Temecula Valley, CA

Share and Collaborate with Video

Students can create and submit videos to journals on Seesaw for self-reflection, sharing with peers, or sharing with their families. Teachers can manage access to each students’ journal to give classmates and connected family members the ability to view, comment, and/or interact with video posts. This encourages students to do their best work for an authentic audience and leads to more collaborative conversations with peers.Math Student Video Lesson Example

One example of this in action is our Math Games: It’s War lesson. In these math activities, students watch increasingly challenging mathematical versions of the popular card game “War” modeled by other students, then use the video recording tool to capture themselves and a partner playing the game and explaining or reflecting on the mathematical concept.

Many teachers also want opportunities to create a collaborative space beyond their classroom by connecting students with families and other classrooms around the world, and found success doing so with both Seesaw and Flip

Seesaw Blogs give students an authentic audience of their classmates, families and other students around the globe, encouraging better work and providing opportunities for real feedback.

Teach video-based lessons tied to standards and learning goals

While open response video creation can be a powerful way to promote student agency, video activities that align to standards and learning goals foster high-quality instruction. We provide structured activities in the Seesaw Library that allow students to quickly record video content connected to specific subject area content and standards.

All of the lessons described below are accessible with a free teacher account, a Seesaw for Schools subscription, or a Seesaw Instruction & Insights subscription.

English Language Development

English Language Development Video Activity

In our English Language Explorers: On the Playground lesson, multilingual learners describe what activities they play on the playground.

In the “Connect” activity in this lesson, students watch a modeling video before using the Video tool to record themselves completing an activity where they act out a playground activity while using target sentence frames.

STEAM

STEAM Video Activity Example

In the lesson Earth’s Events, students learn about Earth’s different events through a variety of STEAM activities. In the Connect activity, students watch a PSA on how to stay safe during an earthquake, then create their own video on how to stay safe during another Earth event that they learned about during previous interactive activities.

Creative Writing

Story Pirates Seesaw Creative Writing Lesson Video Activity

In a lesson we developed with Story Pirates, “Story Pirates Idea Storms: Character Traits and Dialogue,” students write and perform a character dialogue with a partner or group.

Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship Video Lesson Example

In our lesson Bean Goes on the Internet, students learn how to make safe choices on the internet, then create a video explaining how to “ask, choose, and check” to a partner or family member.

Character-building

Rather than video, “I Am a Confident Friend” mirrors how students use stickers on Flip. In this lesson, students identify their strengths and what makes them worthy of friendship. They then take a selfie and ask classmates to add positive affirmations around their photograph.

Video is an amazing way to capture hands-on work in the classroom across subject areas and grade levels, to build student portfolios, and to measure reading, writing, and speaking progress.

With our user-friendly tools, flexible recording options, and powerful sharing capabilities, Seesaw helps classrooms create powerful video content with ease. The features in Seesaw allow teachers to use video to enhance instruction, deepen student understanding, and simplify edtech use.

When teachers use video in Seesaw, they create joyful learning environments that engage their students in new ways. While it’s always challenging to find new technology tools, we hope we left you with some inspiration and ideas if you’re looking for a Flip replacement next year!

With the increased scrutiny on pedagogical best practices due to declining standardized test scores in reading and math, teachers and instructional coaches can feel caught between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, they want to best meet their students’ and families’ needs. On the other hand, access to and understanding of how to integrate research-based practices into their pedagogy can seem impossible. Do not fear! Seesaw is here to help you begin to integrate research-based practices into your practice with ready-to-go resources.

Instructional Strategies for Gradual Release and Active Learning

The gradual release of responsibility1 is an instructional framework where teachers slowly release responsibility of learning to students over time. Teachers begin by describing learning objectives, modeling and thinking aloud to demonstrate key vocabulary and skills, and highlighting the relevance of the lesson. Students observe, make connections, and discuss initial learning with classmates. In this stage, teachers should explicitly teach2 routines to support cognition and comprehension. Seesaw Lessons aid teachers with this crucial explicit instruction. Every lesson begins by introducing important new vocabulary and modeling skills through visuals, audio, video, and more.

The gradual release of learning continues through opportunities for students to respond to teacher’s questions and practice new skills with teacher and peer support. Magic happens when students engage in active learning activities with partners and independently. Through investigation, creative activities, discussion, and reflection3, students are able to connect new learning to prior knowledge and transfer learning into longer-term memory.

The Seesaw Library has thousands of activities to help teachers and students engage in investigation and capture creating learning in the real world on a digital platform. Built in prompts spark engaging discussions and questions. Multimodal tools empower students to engage in hands-on learning experiences and select their preferred method for showcasing it.

Seesaw’s elementary Computer Science curriculum empowers both teachers and students to observe, learn, and apply computer science skills to their everyday lives. Teachers can leverage the instructional videos and example coding programs to explicitly model coding skills and vocabulary. Students collaboratively and independently reflect on their interests and create coding projects such as an animated story, game, dance, and more to share with their learning community. Seesaw Lessons help teachers transfer the responsibility of learning to students over time while engaging students in rich active learning experiences.

Multimodal and Interdisciplinary Instruction

Multimodal instruction is the practice of using multiple formats–such as text, visuals, video, audio, hands-on experiments, and movement–to activate students’ thinking in multiple ways, leading to deeper connections and skill mastery. Students often receive multimodal instruction (inputs), but only text-based opportunities to show their understanding (outputs). This presents teachers with a conundrum: how might they tap into what’s going on in their students’ heads?

Teachers often have a narrow window into students’ understanding. Worksheets and assessments offer written insights. Small group and 1:1 oral assessments provide additional insights, but are often time-consuming to implement routinely.

Alternatively, these eight thinking moves4 can help teachers tap into their students’ heads to get a fuller picture of student understanding while empowering students to build new ideas and connections:

  1. Observe closely and describe what is there
  2. Share explanations
  3. Reason with evidence
  4. Make connections
  5. Consider different points of view and perspectives
  6. Understand deeply and draw conclusions
  7. Wonder and ask questions
  8. Investigate

Students often engage in many of these thinking moves, but are not given opportunities to capture or share their learning with others. Seesaw’s portfolio with multimodal tools makes it easy for teachers to leverage these eight thinking moves. Learners can capture their wonderings, observations, evidence, and reasoning using their choice of tools: drawing, text, audio, video, and more.

Learning new knowledge also requires different cognitive pathways. Quick checks for understanding reveal short-term memory cognition, but how might teachers tap into students’ longer-term memory and mastery of learning? The key is interdisciplinary, project- or inquiry-based learning.

With Seesaw Lessons, students engage in a variety of activities to activate these pathways that focus on attention, memory, reasoning, communication, and visualization. When students are able to engage in digital inquiry5 and apply learning across subjects or to the real-world6, they develop a more complex, transferrable understanding. These practices empower them to use rather than simply acquire knowledge.

Incorporating Formative Assessment and Providing Immediate Feedback

Formative assessments provide insights to teachers and students about their learning to inform instruction. Immediate feedback7 empowers students to self-correct and redirect their learning. This type of feedback also boosts students’ self-esteem and identities as students8. Researchers Carol Dweck, David Yeager, and Jo Boaler refer to this boost of self-esteem and identities as a growth mindset9. When students have a growth mindset and reflect on their learning, they realize they can learn almost anything when they persevere and try new things.

Formative assessment helps teachers encourage their students’ growth mindsets. Teachers can better differentiate and support their students with timely, actionable feedback. Their can create small groups or engage students in collaborative activities10 to reinforce skills and their growth mindsets.

Seesaw’s Formative Assessment feature provides students with immediate feedback11 on multiple-choice, drag and drop, and poll assessments. These quick checks provide students with immediate feedback and the teacher with insights to scaffold or extend learning. When these formative assessments are paired with more open-ended multimodal tools, teachers can get a more holistic picture of students’ understanding. Additionally, teachers can create their own activities with formative assessment or grab standards-aligned, ready-to-go lessons with this tool in the Seesaw Library.

Culturally Responsive Teaching

Culturally responsive teaching honors and encourages students to connect their cultures, languages, interests, and life experiences to what they’re learning at school. Student strengths are celebrated and nurtured, leading to an increased sense of belonging12.

Seesaw Lessons help students see themselves in their learning through diverse characters, stories, and experiences13. Activities help them build empathy, see diverse learners like themselves, and make connections to everyday life14. Extra care has been given to diverse representation in our computer science collections, as a historically homogeneous field. Students learn digital leadership, coding, and computational thinking skills alongside diverse characters. Lessons collections like Careers in Computer Science, Story Pirates: Story Sparks, and What’s My Job highlight real-life individuals working in a variety of professions, helping students better imagine themselves as digital innovators15, with intersectional, complex identities.

Students also draw from funds of knowledge16, a wealth of diverse experiences and skills, in which they can share to enrich the diversity of their classroom. Seesaw’s portfolio with multimodal tools empower learners to showcase their learning in their preferred way. Every lesson in the Seesaw Library is equipped with audio directions in English and Spanish to increase access and support learners. Spanish lessons include fully translated text, audio, video, and visuals to support multilingual learners practicing and sharing their learning. These learners have access to screen, video, and audio recording tools to orally rehearse before sharing.

Fostering Family Engagement

Family engagement research17 shows the impact of engaging families as co-owners of student outcomes. Families are the experts on their child’s interests and cultural experiences. When there are natural ways to bring that expertise to and from the classroom, students are able to connect new information with their experiences and background knowledge, leading to deeper learning. There are high gains in student achievement when parents are informed of what their child is learning and how to support them at home. Consistent outreach to parents (messaging and sending resources to support the child at home) result in high student achievement. Teachers want to engage with their families to support their students, but reaching every family is complex and time-intensive.

Seesaw helps teachers save that time. Once families are connected to their student, they can participate in their child’s learning by viewing their portfolio, commenting on progress, messaging with teachers, and participating in family activities. Teachers can choose to message student work examples to families, or families can already automatically see their child’s work once it is approved and added to their journals. Teachers invest time in the initial setup so that families are automatically kept in the loop every time their child creates something new in Seesaw.

Families can tap into their funds of knowledge and contribute to classroom culture and their child’s learning by commenting on their child’s work and messaging with the teacher. Messages and comments translate into over 100 languages, increasing accessibility. Families can stay up-to-date with classroom events and follow up on student learning at home. Teachers can send reminders or share helpful resources for families to utilize to support their child at home.

Seesaw Lessons also include activities designed to be completed with partners at home or school. These activities explain the importance of this activity or domain to their child’s development. Videos and instructions model for parents how to support and engage in the activities with their child. At Seesaw, families are essential partners to students’ growth. Teachers can easily engage with families with ready-to-go resources, student portfolio work, and messaging tools.

It’s that time of year – a mixture of enthusiasm and anticipation transforms into action as educators begin planning for the academic year and prepare to welcome students back. While exciting, it can be easy to become overwhelmed with jumpstarting the school year on an impressive note. Teachers balance numerous responsibilities like learning students’ names, establishing routines, and setting the stage for a successful academic year.

While this may seem daunting, Seesaw provides easy-to-use tools that will immediately enhance classroom community and instruction. In this blog post, we will focus on three classroom routines that can be easily integrated–all of which require minimal effort and are ready for implementation! There is no need to reinvent the wheel. The only thing needed to get started is an account. Whether you are new to Seesaw or could use a refresher, our objective is to be a guide in seamlessly integrating these ideas into the classroom right away.

Setting Your Classroom Up For Success With Seesaw’s Routines For Back To School

The Seesaw Library makes it easy to establish effective routines immediately. The following three routines for back-to-school are sure to ignite engagement, enhance collaboration, and set a solid foundation for an enriching school year:

COMMUNITY BUILDERS

Seesaw Lesson discussion page

Community builders are essential for the beginning of the school year and beyond. They create a space that celebrates students’ interests, nurturing a sense of belonging. Educators can use social icebreakers and community builders to create a welcoming learning environment where students can thrive. Ideas to continue using community builders throughout the year include Fun Fridays, before collaborative projects, and when a new student joins!

Seesaw offers a collection of ready-to-go icebreakers and community builders that promote inclusivity and connection. These tools are instrumental in fostering a positive atmosphere in the classroom, making them an essential classroom routine that teachers and students will love. Find engaging, ready-to-present community builders inside of Seesaw and take one thing off the back-to-school to-do list.

Getting Started:

In these lessons, students watch a video modeling the activity and discuss the activity before trying it with their teacher’s guidance:

COLLABORATIVE PROTOCOLS

Seesaw Lesson collaborative protocols

Collaborative Protocols build active listeners and communicators, allowing students to hear and explore diverse points of view while building trust in the classroom. One of the most essential parts of collaborative protocols is providing structured, positive, and respectful peer-to-peer communication.

To support this process, Seesaw has created a library of ready-to-use activities! Each activity shows students how to participate with each protocol through student-led modeling videos successfully. Students can analyze the protocol and ask questions before participating in the activity themselves, building more confidence in the routine. Each collaborative protocol has an instructional video where our Seesaw Stars model the protocol. Make Collaborative Protocols a powerful and engaging routine by introducing a new protocol every few weeks to slowly build a repository of strategies for your students to use and showing videos when students need a reminder on how to share their ideas and listen to others.

Getting Started:

In these lessons, students watch a video of the collaborative protocol and discuss the strategy before giving it a try!

WHOLE-CLASS READING WITH DIGITAL BOOKS

Seesaw Lesson I love my name book

Read-alouds are a powerful and engaging routine to establish in elementary classrooms at the beginning of the school year. They cultivate a lifelong love for reading, enhance reading fluency, and enrich vocabulary. Here are some tips for teachers on how to use digital books:

  • Use digital books for whole-class reading time

  • Click play to listen to the book being read aloud fluently, or read the book together to practice print concepts

  • Model for students how to interact with the text using Seesaw creative tools

All books come with digital text and an audio version. There are several options on how to present the book to students. Educators can use the present-to-class to access Seesaw’s creative tools to annotate, identify sight words, discuss story elements, and more! It is helpful to pause every couple of pages and discuss with the class.

Getting Started:

In these lessons, students read the fictional text as a class or independently while stopping to make predictions, ask questions, focus on key story elements, or apply other reading strategies:

Want To See These Routines In Action?

Check out this informative video that outlines these routines and guides how to immediately implement these strategies in the classroom. The back-to-school season brings a mixture of excitement and anticipation. As teachers begin to think about the first few weeks of school, they search for the best back-to-school routines. They might wonder: How can I create a productive learning environment? A safe space? A collaborative flurry of explosive creativity? No matter the specific goals for the classroom, one of the most important first steps is to foster community with intention.

The Importance of Building Classroom Community

Community is key to our well-being as humans. When we feel connected to the people around us, we are stronger, more resilient, and less afraid to take risks! We can teach and learn from each other, think and problem-solve creatively and collaboratively, and feel motivated to achieve group goals.

So, too, does a strong community benefit the classroom. Every teacher wants their students to ask questions, to brainstorm and problem solve, and to work together in harmony. But every teacher also knows that a thriving classroom community doesn’t always happen organically. The beginning of the year is the time to ask, “How can I foster the kind of community needed for my classroom to be successful?” and plan accordingly.

3 Keys to Building a Stronger Classroom Community

  1. Build expectations and routines as a class: Looking for ways for students to take ownership of their learning in the classroom? Invite them to help build classroom routines and expectations. Every learning environment needs structure in order to function; including students in the creation process not only gives them ownership over their experience but also builds trust and confidence. It shows them that their feelings and opinions matter, and they will feel motivated to meet and follow the goals and routines they helped create.

  2. Foster collaboration: Collaboration is essential to a community’s function. In order to collaborate productively, students must feel comfortable sharing with each other, be invested in group goals, and have the tools they need to work creatively. Teachers can foster a collaborative environment by providing engaging opportunities for students to work together and problem-solve– try gamifying your activities or incorporating student interests like music and video. Teach students to listen to one another, give and receive kind and constructive feedback, and value others’ contributions.

  3. Ensure inclusivity and belonging: Inclusivity and belonging go hand in hand and are crucial to student success. Students may spend up to 40 hours a week in the classroom– it should be a place where they feel secure to be themselves, explore, try their hardest, and make mistakes.

When considering inclusivity in the classroom, teachers should ask themselves: is the learning environment accessible to all? Examine the physical space as well as both digital and offline resources. Each student is different– ensure that they are all given a fair chance to learn and grow and that differences in experience and perspective are embraced, explored, and celebrated by all.

We thrive when we feel we belong. Teachers can foster a sense of belonging by communicating how each student uniquely contributes to the community and its goals. Try building in time to understand, encourage, and celebrate each other as a class. Be sure to model the relational behavior you expect to see from students.

Build Your Community With the Help of Seesaw

The Seesaw Library includes many opportunities for community and character building in grades PK-6.

At Seesaw, we are committed to helping educators reach their full potential so that they’re able to encourage and help their students do the same over the course of the year. This begins on the very first day of school. Our past Learn with the Expert sessions have featured research and tactics on various topics, including some helpful ways that educators can start the school year off on the right foot. With invaluable resources such as a great lesson library, featured webinars with industry experts, and thought-leadership conferences, partnering with Seesaw is the perfect way to set yourself up for success this school year.

In addition to the year-round webinars and lessons library, we are also hosting an upcoming online conference in early August that is sure to get educators in the right headspace to begin a great year. Connect is a thought-provoking and dynamic free virtual conference, crafted by educators for educators with the goal of igniting inspiration, fostering growth, and energizing educators for the school year. This two-day personalized conference features engaging panel sessions, networking opportunities, certificates of attendance for each session, and more. Now, let’s dive into our tips for starting off the school year on the right foot!

Create a Kind and Calm Classroom Through Mindfulness

Did you know that for every minute of explicit social and emotional learning instruction, classroom teachers gain back 12 minutes of academic lesson time? Encouraging mindfulness to occur in the classroom is a great way to increase attention, teach how to self-regulate, build stronger empathy and social-emotional skills, and improve overall well-being.

Research shows that students who receive social-emotional instruction and support—like mindful practice—experience an 11% gain in standardized testing outcomes. By definition, mindfulness is paying attention to what is happening in the present moment, as a way to help humans know themselves which in turn makes them kinder and more self-aware.

In our recent webinar Learn with the Expert: Create a Calm, Focused, and Kind Classroom with Mind Yeti’s Casey Escola, educators learn practical strategies for integrating mindfulness into the classroom in order to create a calm, kind, and focused environment. With Mind Yeti’s lessons on emotional regulation, empathy, compassion, and focus, educators are able to maximize valuable instructional time and create a positive learning environment for students. Because mindfulness can benefit both students and teachers and has a beneficial lasting effect on young learners, it’s a great practice to implement in your classroom at the beginning of this school year.

Foster Family Engagement

Because learning happens everywhere, all the time, it’s critical that families take part in their student’s education. By setting this precedent at the beginning of the year, educators are able to foster lifelong learners successfully. The experts on our recent Learn with the Seesaw Expert: PreK and Transitional Kindergarten with Seesaw Library session exhibited the importance of supporting PK and TK learners in order to help them thrive—an idea that applies to all grade levels.

Even seemingly small tasks such as tackling an assignment together as a family shows support, involvement, and interest in a student’s education. Teachers and educators are able to do this by inviting families into the “classroom” as part of the lesson. Starting at the beginning of the school year, educators should encourage families to support their learners by providing space for play and natural curiosity, working alongside them on their lessons, and connecting with the school community by getting involved.

Encourage Intelligent Digital Citizens

The beginning of the year is a great time to cover how to stay safe while learning online—a skill that is growing more crucial in today’s digital world. Because students will most likely be learning on electronic devices through the school year, it’s educators’ responsibility to ensure students know how to act responsibly and respectfully in this new territory to make sure they are staying safe.

In our Learn with the Seesaw Expert: Digital Citizenship with Seesaw Library with Kris Szajner webinar, educators learn how they can support students in becoming good digital citizens by covering safety fundamentals and responsibility in addition to using tools like Seesaw’s online platform and library. Over the course of the year, students can learn to problem-solve and think critically when faced with decisions online, but the best way to build up to this point is to lay the foundations at the beginning of the school year.

EXCITING NEW BEGINNINGS AWAIT

There are so many great beginnings waiting for both students and educators at the opening of this school year! Setting the classroom up for success is one of the best ways to maximize the potential of individuals and the class as a whole this year.

We took a field trip to visit Lindsay Kemeny, a first grade teacher in Davis School District. She shared what’s on her mind this year as she gets ready for back to school!

Pick one word that is your focus or intention this school year.

Lindsay: Embrace

What are some traditions or superstitions you have for the first day of school?

Lindsay: I love reading students the book “Don’t Eat Your Classmates” on the first day of school. It’s fun and silly and gets everyone laughing.

How does Seesaw bring learning to life in your classroom?

Lindsay: It gives students an authentic reason to do their work. Students are so excited to share their writing, reading, creations, etc. with others.

What is the best advice someone ever gave you?

Lindsay: A wonderful mentor of mine taught me to have high expectations for all students. It’s made such a difference in my teaching.

How do you use Seesaw to connect with families?

Lindsay: I love that parents can see first-hand what we are doing in the classroom. It’s like being a fly on the wall. I love it and so do they!

If you were able to have an unlimited amount of something for your classroom, what would it be and why?

Lindsay: Fine point dry-erase markers. My students use these every day and we can never have enough.

Share one Seesaw goosebumps moment. Was there a time learning was captured on Seesaw that gave you goosebumps?

Lindsay: I love when students hear a recording of their reading from the beginning of the year and compare it with one at the end. It’s so fun to hear their excitement and surprise.

What is the best compliment you could get from a student or a parent?

Lindsay: “When they tell me how impressed they are with the amount of growth they’ve seen from their child.”

What would your students be surprised to find out about you?

Lindsay: That I have written a book for teachers about teaching reading! I’m so excited to share my new book with my students this coming year. I’ll tell them about how I wanted to be a writer when I was a kid and now I finally am one. I hope this inspires them to reach for their goals and dreams.

Share a notable teaching moment that you still think about today.

Lindsay: The moment one of my students excitedly exclaimed, “Mrs. Kemeny! I am ACTUALLY READING THE WORDS!” I can still hear his voice and see the look on his face. Best moment ever.

What/who inspired you to become an educator?

Lindsay: I was a serious dancer when I was younger and would often perform in school assemblies. It was being in those schools that made me realize I wanted to be a teacher.

If you could take your students on a field trip to anywhere in the world, where would you take them? And why?

Lindsay: I’d say an educational tour of Disneyland, but to be honest…I’d be way too stressed about losing a student there! Haha. Since I love teaching reading, maybe Powell’s Bookstore in Portland which is the largest independent bookstore in the world. And then I’d pair that trip with something fun like an aquarium or the coast.
